ChurrasqueiraRibatejo

A Portuguese charcoal grill on Spring Street, in Ossining.

The kitchen’s own description leads with the charcoal grill and calls the chicken famous — then goes on to ribs, fresh fish and seafood, traditional Portuguese dishes and a daily special.

“I probably would had walk by it because it looks like a small takeout place — but they have a beautiful bar setup with few tables.”

— a customer from Tarrytown, on her first visit

It looks like a counter. There is a dining room behind it.

She found the place by accident, nearly walked past, and left saying she would definitely be back. Another customer writes that you can see straight into the kitchen and they are not hiding anything.

That mismatch between the shopfront and the room is costing this restaurant walk-ins, and it is precisely the sort of thing a page of your own exists to fix: two photographs of the inside and one sentence, and nobody walks past again.

Portuguese, and cooked over charcoal.

Five things, in the order the kitchen itself puts them. This is the restaurant’s own description of what it cooks — not a menu, and not a price list.

  • Charcoal grill chicken
  • Ribs
  • Fresh fish
  • Seafood
  • A daily special

Where this came from. The restaurant describes itself as “a charming Portuguese restaurant nestled in the heart of Ossining” and leads with “our famous charcoal grill chicken.” The published text breaks off mid-word at the last item, so a daily special is a reading of it rather than a quotation. Worth confirming.

Dishes customers name themselves.

Every one of these came out of a customer’s own words — several only as the caption on a photograph. None of it came from a menu, and none of it is confirmed by the restaurant. If a dish is wrong or off the menu now, it comes off this page.

(PA) means position approximate. On a sea chart it marks a sounding somebody reported that nobody went back and re-surveyed. Every dish below carries it, and every one is set in italic, because that is exactly their status here: reported by a customer, never confirmed by the kitchen. The moment the restaurant confirms one, the mark comes off it.

  • Pastéis de bacalhau(PA)Cod fritters — “the best around here,” said one regular
  • Bife à saia(PA)The skirt steak, named in Portuguese by the people ordering it
  • Cozido à portuguesa(PA)The boiled dinner, photographed by a customer just back from Portugal
  • Leitão(PA)Suckling pig — named once, in a photograph
  • Chicken stew(PA)Ordered as a special of the day
  • Paella(PA)Listed for two; a customer reckoned it would feed four

Four things this page cannot tell you.

They are printed here rather than guessed at, and only the restaurant can fill them in.

  • No menu
There is no menu published anywhere online. Not in Portuguese and not in English, which for a restaurant whose customers name dishes in Portuguese makes a bilingual menu the biggest single thing missing.
  • No prices
No price appears anywhere on this page, because nothing reliable was published.A figure invented to fill the gap would be worse than leaving the gap where anyone can see it.
  • No photos
There are photographs of this restaurant online, and none of them are mine to use.Which is a shame, because pictures of the inside are the one thing that would fix the walk-past problem above.
  • The bar
A customer describes a bar — wine and beer only. The restaurant has not said so itself, so it stands here as a customer’s word and nothing more.

Closed Tuesdays. Eleven to ten the rest of the week.

The same eleven hours six days out of seven, including both weekend days — and shut on Tuesday, which is the one day nobody guesses.

What the public record says.

Neither line below came from the restaurant. Both are here because somebody looking the place up will find them anyway.

And these are the tags a public listing carries for the restaurant. They are somebody else’s words about the place, printed here as found and worth correcting:

Ribatejo is a Portuguese province on the banks of the Tagus; Ossining sits on the Hudson. That is why this page is drawn as a river chart. The drawing is mine, not the restaurant’s.
